I and another friend here in the Mathematics Dept. in Berkeley have
Sparc 2's and we can't stand the noise that this machine makes.

I solved my problem by placing mine in the garage and running a pretty long
(and expensive) cable to my library, where I have the keyboard and the
monitor, and away from the noise.

He uses his at the office and does NOT have that option, and he is thinking
about disabling the FAN of the machine.

Most people say he is CRAZY and that will blow the machine in a few hours...
but then most people said that to me 6 years ago when I disabled the FAN on
my 3-50 and nothing happened till today.

The big question is: What needs to be cooled inside a Sparc 2 ? Disks ?
The circuit board ? Or the power-supply itself ?

If the answer is only the power-supply needs to be cooled than, one can move
the power supply away (and put it on the porch, outside) connceted by long
cables back to the machine. If the circuit and disks need the cooling then
that won't work.

Anybody tried this before ?????

I have my SS2 sitting on my desk directly in front
of me with the monitor on top of it. I too found it a bit
noisy. I discovered though that simply blocking the opening
in the front of the slab between the two front feet prevented
a large amount of noise from coming out the front directly
at me. There are still large openings on the sides for
ventalation. If you try this make sure the sides are clear.
This has made a LARGE difference to me. Just something less
readical to try.

SS2 has 2 fans.. SS1 has only one, and the disk drives are
untouchable hot. To SS2 they added a small fan which blows
through the bottom of the case, and probably makes the noise
you are blocking away. The disk drives are hot, but not as
hot as in SS1.

I asked Sun about changing the internal disks to bigger and faster ones...
they said it was not 'supported' because of ventilation problems..

I asked local sun about adding more disk
